Adding SSL to a Serendipity site running on a Synology looked hard to me in te past. I already created certificates for the sites running on the Synology, but I never gave me the time to do the changes. One reason was that I read too many articles about issues due to the changes made and another reason was I was lasy. Today it was time to change this!

  • The first step is to add the neccessary certificates on the platform you're using to host the sites. I myself use Synology so I used the build-in security tool to add and manage the certificates (follow this article). Since I already added the neccessary certificates I only needed to check them; valid!

  • The next step is to migrate the sites to SSL/HTTPS. I followed this article on the Serendipity blog site to do this. Be sure to open the management page for the site first before executing the first step, changing the .htaccess file for the site, otherwise accessing the management page could be difficult. Following the steps in the article should migrate the site to SSL/HTTPS with no further issues.

  • The third step is to check the site via HTTPS. Sometimes the browser gives warnings about parts of the site not being connected via SSL/HTTPS. These parts have to be checked seperately and thoroughly.

After following these steps everything is running via SSL/HTTPS, great!
